Boys U13 Indoor Chance to Compete County Finals

On Monday 20th January, Devon Cricket hosted the inaugural U13 Boys “Chance to Compete” County Finals. This is an 8-a-side indoor soft ball competition for schools. The Finals Day saw schools representing their School Games Organiser (SGO) areas having qualified through their Area Rounds earlier in the school year.

The competition started with a round robin format. Torquay Boy’s Grammar (Torbay Partnership) qualified for the semi-finals after securing victories over Devonport High School for Boys (Plymouth SSP) and Newton Abbot College (Souh Dartmoor Partnership). Devonport High School for Boys (DHSB) won a close match with Newton Abbot College to also secure a semi-final berth.

The second group was proving too close to call. Two early victories for Bideford College (North Devon Partnership) put them in a strong position. A last ball victory against The King’s School (East Devon SSP) was followed by a 1 run victory over Okehampton College (West Devon Partnership). Meanwhile, South Dartmoor College suffered a 2 run defeat to Okehampton College but bounced back with a strong performance to beat King’s. With one round of matches still to play, any of the four teams could still qualify. South Dartmoor won a high scoring affair against early front runners Bideford meaning that both teams made the semi-finals. Okehampton’s day was done as they lost to King’s meaning the latter went into a play off for 5th place against Newton Abbot College.

King’s duly secured 5th position with a convincing victory over Newton Abbot College.

The semi-finals proved to be less close than the group matches with South Dartmoor scoring 94/0 and restricting DHSB to 79/2. On the adjacent pitch, Torquay Boys’Grammar racked up an impressive 117/6. Scoreboard pressure and tight bowling and fielding restricted Bideford College to 47/4 in reply.

The tension noticeably rose as three pitches were reduced to two and the serious business of deciding the medal winners began. In the 3rd place play off, Bideford College set an impressive 91/4 from their 8 overs. With just a single ball left, DHSB were on 90/3. The final delivery of the match was duly tucked away for 3 runs securing them the bronze medal.

Torquay Boy’s Grammar batted first in the final reaching a competitive 71/2 from their allocation of overs. At the half way stage there was only 2 runs in it, but tight bowling in overs 6 and 7 saw South Dartmoor fall behind the run rate. With 19 required from the final over, they mustered a reasonable 9 meaning they fell 10 runs short and the County Champions were Torquay Boy’s Grammar.
